Finding Strength in the Midst of Chaos: A Reflection on Psalm 46:1-5 (KJV)

Writer's picture: Rita FullerRita Fuller

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early." – Psalm 46:1-5 (KJV)

The psalm begins with a declaration: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." A refuge is a place of safety and security, symbolizing God as our shelter during life’s trials. When the storms of life rage, we can run to Him for protection and peace. Strength speaks to God’s sustaining power. He not only shields us but empowers us to endure hardships, reminding us that His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). The phrase "very present help" emphasizes God’s immediacy. He is not distant but one who is actively engaged in our lives, ready to provide assistance at a moment’s notice. He is Jehovah Shammah!

Verses 2 and 3 continue: "Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah." This vivid imagery portrays apocalyptic events—mountains falling, seas roaring, and the very earth trembling. These are symbols of utter chaos, a world turned upside down. Yet, the psalmist proclaims that we will not fear. Why? Because our trust is not in the stability of the earth or the mountains, but in God, who is unchanging and eternal. The word Selah invites us to pause and reflect on this truth: fear loses its grip when we anchor ourselves in God’s promises.

There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. In stark contrast to the roaring seas, the psalmist introduces a river—a symbol of peace, provision, and life. This river represents God’s presence and blessings flowing to His people. The "city of God" refers to God’s dwelling among His people, both in the earthly Jerusalem and spiritually in the hearts of believers. This river is a source of gladness and refreshment, a reminder that even in turmoil, God provides spiritual sustenance and joy.

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The assurance here is profound: when God is present, stability and security follow. The "her" refers to the city of God, symbolic of His people. Despite external upheavals, the city remains unshaken because of God’s abiding presence. Similarly, when God dwells in our hearts, we too can remain unshaken, no matter the trials we face. "Right early" emphasizes God’s perfect timing. His help arrives exactly when it is needed, never late or delayed.

Psalm 46:1-5 offers timeless encouragement for believers facing personal, societal, or global challenges. Its truths remind us to seek God as our refuge and strength. When the storms of life come, lean into Him through prayer, Scripture, and worship. Choose faith over fear, trusting in God’s sovereignty even when circumstances seem insurmountable. Embrace God’s peace and provision, letting His presence be the river that refreshes and sustains your soul amid turmoil. Stand firm in His presence, recognizing that when God is with you, you are secure, unshakable, and empowered.
