From the Ministry's Desk: Where Do You Stand? On Christ, the Solid Rock or Sinking Sand?

In a world filled with rapid change, uncertainty, and moral decay, it is crucial to pause and ask: Where are we standing now in time, according to biblical prophecy? The Word of God provides clear signs of the times, and Ellen G. White’s inspired writings amplify the call to examine ourselves in light of His truth. As we reflect on Isaiah 1, biblical prophecy, and Ellen White’s warnings, we are compelled to ask some pressing questions: Are we standing on Christ, the Solid Rock, or are we sinking in the sands of worldly deception? Are we standing for righteousness, or have we bowed to unrighteousness?

Standing on Christ or Sinking Sand?

In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus contrasts two builders: one who builds his house on the rock and another on the sand. The house built on the rock withstands the storms, while the one on the sand falls. This parable serves as a stark reminder that only those who build their lives on Christ, the Solid Rock, will endure the trials of these last days.

Isaiah 1:16-20 echoes this call to righteousness:

“Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow...” (KJV).

These verses invite us to repentance and a life firmly grounded in God’s will. Are we actively seeking purity and justice, or are we swept away by worldly influences?

Standing in Sodom and Gomorrah

Isaiah 1:10 likens the leaders of Israel to the rulers of Sodom and Gomorrah, cities infamous for their sin and subsequent destruction. Today, we see similar patterns: rampant immorality, rejection of God’s laws, and glorification of sin. Ellen White writes in Patriarchs and Prophets, “The sins that called for vengeance upon Sodom and Gomorrah exist today. The world is fast becoming ripe for destruction.” Just as in the days of Christ, the leaders called for His death. As with the stoning of Stephen, it repeated itself, the so-called religious leaders called for Stephens's death. So where today do the religious leaders stand?

This sobering reality compels us to ask: Are we standing in Sodom, comfortable amidst sin, or are we standing apart, like Lot, distressed by the iniquity around us (2 Peter 2:7-8)? Are we engaging in righteous living and warning others of the impending judgment, or have we grown desensitized to the corruption?

Standing for What’s Right or Bowing to Unrighteousness?

In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image, choosing instead to stand for God’s truth, even at the risk of death. Their example challenges us today: Will we stand for what is right, even when it is unpopular or dangerous?

Ellen White, in Testimonies for the Church, warns that many will compromise their faith in the face of societal pressure: “The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name.”

Are we those men and women? Are we standing boldly for God’s commandments, or are we bowing to the idols of wealth, power, and pleasure?

Standing in Line for Heaven or Destruction?

Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:13-14 that there are two paths: the narrow way that leads to life and the broad way that leads to destruction. Every day, through our choices, we either move closer to the gates of heaven or drift toward eternal loss.

Ellen White describes the final events of Earth’s history in vivid detail in The Great Controversy: “The agencies of evil are combining their forces and consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis. Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones.”

The question remains: Are we prepared? Are we standing in line for heaven, heeding God’s call to readiness, or are we blindly following the masses toward destruction?

A Call to Stand Firm

Now more than ever, God calls His people to stand firm on the foundation of His Word. We must ask ourselves daily:

  • Are we standing on the promises of Christ, trusting Him as our Rock and Redeemer?

  • Are we living out the principles of righteousness, as outlined in Isaiah 1?

  • Are we willing to stand apart from a world steeped in sin, like Daniel’s friends?

  • Are we committed to walking the narrow path, striving for the eternal reward of heaven?

Ellen White writes in Steps to Christ: “If we are Christ’s, our greatest joy will be to reflect His image.” Standing on the Solid Rock means reflecting Christ in our words, actions, and decisions. It means being unwavering in our faith, even when storms rage around us.

Conclusion

In these perilous times, awareness of where we are standing is crucial. Let us not be found standing in the sinking sands of compromise, the moral decay of Sodom, or the broad road to destruction. Instead, let us stand on Christ, the Solid Rock, building our lives on His truth, standing for righteousness, and walking the narrow path toward heaven. As we do so, may we echo the words of the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 16:13:

“Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.”

May God grant us the strength to stand firm until the end.
