What Should Our Mouth Speak? A Biblical Perspective (KJV)

Writer's picture: Rita FullerRita Fuller

The words we speak have power. They can uplift or tear down, bless or curse, bring life or destruction. The Bible provides clear guidance on how we should use our words to glorify God and edify others. Let us explore what Scripture teaches about the words that should come from our mouths.

Our Words Should Glorify God

The primary purpose of our speech should be to glorify God. Whether in praise, thanksgiving, or daily conversation, our words should honor Him.

  • Psalm 19:14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

  • Hebrews 13:15 – “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”

Our words should reflect a heart that acknowledges God’s greatness and expresses gratitude.

Our Words Should Speak Truth

Truth is at the foundation of godly speech. Lies, deception, and falsehood are condemned in the Bible, while honesty is upheld.

  • Ephesians 4:25 – “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.”

  • Proverbs 12:22 – “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.”

Speaking truth aligns us with God's character, for He is a God of truth (Deuteronomy 32:4).

Our Words Should Be Full of Grace and Wisdom

The Bible encourages us to use wisdom and grace in our speech, ensuring that our words are helpful and seasoned with kindness.

  • Colossians 4:6 – “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

  • Proverbs 15:1 – “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

We should be mindful of how our words impact others, ensuring that they bring peace and encouragement rather than strife.

Our Words Should Edify and Encourage Others

Instead of tearing others down, our words should build them up, offering encouragement and support.

  • Ephesians 4:29 – “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

  • Proverbs 16:24 – “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.”

Our words should be instruments of healing, bringing comfort and encouragement to those around us.

Our Words Should Avoid Gossip and Slander

The Bible strongly warns against gossip, backbiting, and slander, as they cause division and harm.

  • Proverbs 11:13 – “A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.”

  • James 4:11 – “Speak not evil one of another, brethren.”

A godly tongue does not spread falsehood or stir up strife but seeks peace and reconciliation.

Our Words Should Be Slow and Thoughtful

Speaking too hastily can lead to regret. The Bible advises us to be slow to speak and quick to listen.

  • James 1:19 – “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”

  • Proverbs 29:20 – “Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.”

Taking time to consider our words before speaking prevents unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings.

Our Words Should Avoid Profanity and Corruption

The Bible teaches that foul language and corrupt speech should have no place in the life of a believer.

  • Colossians 3:8 – “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”

  • Matthew 12:36-37 – “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

Words reflect the condition of the heart. A heart transformed by Christ produces pure and wholesome speech.

Our Words Should Be a Witness for Christ

One of the greatest uses of our mouth is to testify of Christ and share the gospel with others.

  • Mark 16:15 – “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

  • Romans 10:9 – “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

Speaking about Jesus, sharing testimonies, and spreading His Word should be a priority for every believer.

Conclusion: Speak Life, Speak Truth, Speak Love

Our words hold the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21). As followers of Christ, we are called to speak words that glorify God, reflect truth, edify others, and spread the gospel.

May we daily pray, like David in Psalm 141:3 – “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.”

By yielding our speech to God, we ensure that our words align with His will, bringing blessing to others and glory to His name. Let us speak wisely, speak kindly, and speak for Christ.
